Growing up in poverty is not just about the lack of money but about the attitudes that children learn as they develop and grow in a totally powerless situation. More than 1,500,000 Australian families live in situations well below the poverty line. The teenagers living in these families are not just faced with the fact that often there is no food on the table, no money to pay the power bills, no funds to provide enough clothing, foot wear, etc. Teenagers living in these homes are also confronted with the reality of their own powerlessness to change any of it and get a better future. A few will break free, but most will not. Without support and assistance they will be denied access to the many opportunities that Australia has to offer and so the pattern will continue, for them and for their children, and for their children's children.
Learning to Grow is a program for Australian teenagers living in poverty and designed to give them the power to change their future by providing the means to access the opportunities for growth available to us living in Australia.
Learning to Grow provides the funds and support that allows disadvantaged Australian teenagers to attend school excursions and camps; that provides the school supply and motivation to succeed in their school work; that enables them to actively participate in community recreation and social programs, that the poverty of their family currently denies to them.
Learning to Grow gives Australian teenagers living in poverty the chance to change their future by overcoming the barriers to their full participation in Australian community life today.
