What is Coaching
Is Coaching different to Counselling?
Are there times when Coaching is not appropriate?

What is Coaching?
We use the term "coach"in its most positive sense. A Coach is someone who supports, guides, and encourages another person to learn, develop and grow in order to attain their goals in what ever endeavour they are attempting. A sports coach, for example, doesn't physically play the game with the sports person. Instead they ensure that the sports person has all the resources, training or practice and motivation they need in order to succeed.

In exactly the same way a Personal or Family Coach suppoprts, guides and encourages you to learn, develop and grow in order for you to achieve your goals, whether your goals are related to personal ambition, relationship enhancement or improving your family life.

Is Coaching different to Counselling?
Counselling usually focuses on specific issues and requires a great deal of exploration regarding history and past experiences. Counselling addresses emotions and feelings and is often inward looking and reflective in nature. Counselling is usually discussion based, seeking to identify the root cause of problematic behaviours or attitudes and then, with that knowledge, proceeding to correct or alter the situation. Coaching focuses on where you are right now and where you want to be in the future. Coaching is a practical response to need in your life and the steps needed to be taken in order to change your current reality to something different. Coaching is action based, seeking to provide you with the resources, training, practice and motivation to change the current situation so that you can succeed in achieving your goals. Coaching is a partnership that provides a means whereby you can achieve your goals through support and guidance.

Are there times when coaching is not appropriate?
Coaching doesn't really work as a means of critical crisis intervention. So we would not recommend this as a model for those experiencing serious mental health issues, drug addiction or domestic violence. These sorts of situations must first be addressed through medical or counselling interventions. Coaching can assist further down the track but this should always be in consultation with your existing health professional.
